INGL 3105: Skills for Communication in the Sciences
1st Partial Exam Practice #1
Prepared by Dr. W. Rybarkiewicz
During your 1st Partial Exam you will be given a handout containing a scientific paper or a lab report without the abstract and without its title. You will read it carefully. After you are satisfied that you have thoroughly understood the purpose of the study, the nature of the experiments, the materials used, the results and the conclusions, you will be asked to write:
1. an appropriate abstract which should be concise and to the point,
2. an appropriate title.
The best way to prepare oneself to take the exam is to find a similar paper in your area of study, shade the title and the abstract, read the body of the paper carefully, then write the title and the abstract yourself. When you have uncovered the original title and the abstract and compared them to what you have written, you will have an idea how close you have come to what's desired.
It is of course assumed that you have covered all the assigned readings about the structure of scientific papers.
